As I was sitting in court this morning the bailiff decided to lecture those in the courtroom about what it means to be a parent. When I walked in the courtroom I heard “Superman and Wonder Woman.” The bailiff then asked whether anyone had looked in the mirror that day and saw that they were wearing a red cape. Only I raised my hand and responded I have two boys so I always have to wear my cape. Little did I know what he was going to say next. He asked everyone whether there was anyone in their lives who thinks they wear a cape everyday. No one responded. The bailiff then asked whether anyone thought their kids think they wear a red cape. He went on to state how their kids look up to them and see them as superheros everyday and wouldn’t it be great if both of those kids superheros could work together to resolve their differences.
It made me really look at my life and my cases. When I raised my hand I just meant that we sometimes play dress up as superheros or sometimes pretend we are being superheros. After hearing how our kids look up to us everyday as their real life superhero I started to think about how everything I try to do is for them and I hope they realize it. It also made me start thinking about needing to stress the importance of this to my clients. Their children’s best interest should always be first and foremost in their heads, not only because it is what matters to the Judge, but also because these children look up to them as role models everyday.
So be sure to put on your red cape today and everyday.
