Ok, you might be asking, what does this post have to do with a mediation blog? Well as an attorney who represented people in divorces I kept saying to myself, “There has to be a better way.” My answer to that is the do it yourself divorce, but with mediation.
If money is an issue, hiring an attorney to represent you may not be something you can afford to do. You certainly cannot afford to hire one and then not be able to continue to pay them as the case continues on and then the attorney withdraws from your case.
If you and your spouse generally get along, but you simply cannot agree on how to split your property or agree on child issues then perhaps you can still do a do it yourself divorce, but start with mediation first.
Perhaps you have agreed to all of the child issues such as who will see the children and when and how much child support will be paid, but you cannot agree on how property will be divided. Or maybe it is the opposite way around. Mediation and a do it yourself divorce just may be the answer for you.
First you schedule a mediation through my website at www.welshlawmediation.com. You will want to schedule a minimum of a four hour mediation. If you have more complicated issues, then a six hour or full day mediation may be more appropriate. You attend mediation where I will help you resolve your issues. Then after mediation, either you can use the free forms available for the public or I can refer you to an attorney who will draft your paperwork based on your agreements.
Wait, you said do it yourself and you just mentioned an attorney? Yes, some people feel more comfortable having an attorney draft the paperwork so that they know there are no issues so I offer that option. If mediation is successful, the cost of hiring the attorney is significantly decreased because the parties have already reached their agreements.
