So I admit it, I have a problem. I seem to find cops who think I am speeding. So when I got pulled over last week the first thing I did after I got back to the office was to ask for a referral for an attorney to take care of my speeding ticket. Why would I do this if I am an attorney? Simple answer, that’s not the area of law I handle. Yes, I could probably handle it myself, but there are attorneys who do only traffic tickets. They have the experience that I do not. My experience is in Family Law. Many of those traffic ticket attorneys would never represent themselves in a Family Law matter because that is not their area of practice.
So why do I write this post? Many people think they can handle legal matters on their own. This is not just limited to traffic tickets. Many people negotiate personal injury settlements with insurance companies on their own. Many people try to handle complex divorces on their own. Many try to write contracts between parties without an attorney.
Perhaps you are saving some money, but what if the mistake you made in the paperwork ends up costing you thousands later. What if you didn’t properly divide all community property in a divorce? What if you did not draft the contract correctly and the other person walks off half way through the project? What if those injuries from that car accident are not fully healed, yet you have already settled?
I know when I do not know an area of law I contact someone who works in that area.
