First off, I must thank Natalie Johnson for bringing this video to my attention. I normally do not watch Facebook videos but she tagged me in it and asked for my opinion. That request motivated this blog post.

In this video Ms. Alexa states that the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution is not valid because it was never ratified. She does not detail out her basis for this belief so I want to set everyone straight. The 14th Amendment was ratified on July 28, 1868 according to several sources which are linked to below.

America’s Library

PBS

Our Documents

Library of Congress

So I do not know where Ms. Alexa gets her belief that it was not ratified and I would definitely be interested in this information.

Regardless of her belief on the above, Ms. Alexa goes on to state that a “bill” is void if based on an illegal amendment to the Constitution. Only issue here is that this was not a “bill”. It was not submitted to the House of Representatives or the Senate. It was not submitted to the President of the United States. THIS was a case that went through the legal system. It went through the courts all the way up to the United States Supreme Court for their interpretation. So her argument that it is void is simply wrong. This is case law. This is not something that passed through the Legislature.

So while I commend Ms. Alexa for trying to set the record straight and providing a thought-provoking video, I believe her information to be wrong.
