In Texas it is possible to change your name, without having to get married, so long as you are not doing it to avoid creditors and are not trying to avoid criminal prosecution.

While this may sound simple enough, just because you CAN get a name change does not always mean a Judge is going to grant your name change. In fact a Judge once told me she refused to grant a name change because of the chosen new name. Additionally, in the case of transgender individuals, the Judge just may not understand or may have a bias that would sway the Judge’s decision. Unfortunately it is solely in the Judge’s discretion to grant the name change.
